This post takes place after Spacecat and his party leave Pat's forest. (Pat,
you can fill in what happened the night before if you want.)
-----

After the night of excess at the place of eternal excess, the mystical
forest of Mantango, Spacecat ever-growing number of companions trekked on. As
the mushroom people had told them, the old man who lived north of the forest
could probably help them find Colin, Mog's other prisoners, and the other
materia warriors.
They trekked northward, and eventually they found a clearing in the
woods. At the center of that clearing, there was a run-down shack, lighted
inside. The shack was surrounded by a circle of stones, with a curious
circular mark on each one. "This must be the place," said Spacecat. Chaos
nodded.
Spacecat knocked at the door. "Come in," said a voice inside. Space
pushed the door open (There was no doornob to speak of). When he saw the man
who the voice belonged too, he did a double-take. "Hey!" he said, "You're
that guy who I saw stalking us earlier."
The man chuckled, "I see that you remember a face, my boy. Now come
inside. We have much to discuss." Spacecat came in, and Seph started to come
in behind him, but the Old Man said, "No Seph, I must converse with Mr.
Spacecat in private." He then closed the door, leaving Chaos, Seph, Lorak,
The Sliders, and the Beastie Boys outside.
"How do you know our names?" said Spacecat, "Are you psychic or
something?"
"No, my boy. I get my information about things by observing, usually
with the help of these devices," he motioned around the room to various
computers, printers, fax machines, radios, and other electronic that Spacecat
had never seen anything like before. "Also," said the Old Man, "I never cease
to stop learning about the present and the future, from records of the past."
He motioned to columns and stacks and piles of old dusty books. Spacecat
could tell from the covers that the books were written in many different
languages, some he recognised, some he didn't. "And sometimes," the man said,
"I observe things the old fashioned way, with my own eyes, like I did with
you. That was the first time I had ever seen you in person, but I had known
of you before that."
"Ah, you must have seen me on Springer."
"Yes, I did, but I knew of you and your potential long before that, long
before your birth even." A chill ran down Spacecat's spine.
"Since then," said the old man, "I've heard about you from many sources,
such as the books in Reis Weapon's library."
"You've been there too?!" said Spacecat, "So it is real! How did you get
there??"
"There are some things that I cannot reveal to you. You must learn of
them on your own. Now is only the beginning of your journey. You will learn
much in the time to follow. Such as this: Did you know that the rate of
appearences of reality-deviants has increased three-fold since the underwear
crisis began?"
     "No, I didn't know that..."
"The Gates have openned. There are forces which now exist on our plain
of reality that before were secluded in their own universes, watching us, but
only able to act on our world indirectly. Spacecat, what do you think is the
most evil force in this world."
"Well, it wouldn't be Mog," said Space, "Because I know he was here
previous to the underwear war. Could it be the dark moogle?"
"Well, my boy, you are correct in assuming that the Dark Moogle is a
greater threat to our world than Mog is, but neither one of them is evil at
the core. Mog is acting in retaliation to years of persecution, as is the
Dark Moogle. Their actions should not be condoned, but if put in their
position, you or I might do the same things they have done. No, my boy, the
forces I speak of are the essence of pure evil. Mog and the Dark Moogle are
unwitting allies of these forces."
     'Umm... Okay," said Spacecat.
"You will learn more of the nature of these forces in the time to come.
But don't expect to know or see all of what they are, for to do that is to
become one of them. As I was saying, it is only the beginning of your
journey. The first stage of that journey is now over. And it is time for
your to part with your companion."
     "Who, Chaos?"
"No, I speak of someone else, Poochie." The Poochie Magicite levitated
out of Spacecat's pocket and metamorphed in the physical form of Poochie.
"It has been nice traveling with you, Spacecat. Now that my guidance has
lead you to the Old Man, my job is done. Now I must return to the lifestream.
Goodbye old friend." He then liquified and drained into the soil floor of of
the shack. Spacecat couldn't believe what he saw.
"Now you must go," said the Old Man. "You must find the other Slider and
the other Materia warriors, if the world is to be safe again. As we speak,
Mog and Bacca are having peace talks, but possible battles between their
armies are only one of the things threatening the existence of this universe
as we know it. This Is Who We Are."
"What?" said Spacecat, in responce to that last sentence. The Old Man
just opened the door and motioned for Spacecat to continuue his quest.

Next time... The rescue!
