Curt threw back the flap of the tent and plopped down on the cot. Never
before had he regretted his decision to join the army quite as much as he
did at that moment. The drilling, the patrols, guard duty- especially guard
duty. At first, it was that he found himself jumping at every sound; now,
he found that he wouldn't move for anything except the occasional officer
or sergeant.

Just as the cot was beginning to feel the least bit comfortable, Tyler threw
back the tent flap and unslung his
backpack with a groan.

"Sheeyit," he cursed wearily. "The guard duty I can understand, but what
I don't get is why we gotta do it with 40 pounds of useless crap on our
backs."

Curt only groaned in reply.

After a moment, Tyler turned to him and said, "So, what's a guy like you
doing in this dump?"

Curt sat up, a little suspicious. "Why do you ask?"

The other shrugged. "Just curious."

Curt was silent for a moment, then returned the shrug. "I dunno. I guess
I wanted to learn discipline. You know, have responsibility and stuff. I
guess I figured the army would whip me into shape. I just never figured it'd
whip me into an armed conflict," he finished with a grimace.

"Heh, no one does," chuckled Tyler.

"How about you, then," asked Curt, "Why did you enlist?"

"Well, I figured it was the only thing I was good at. See, I used to do
mercenary work, so I figured I was qualified."

"So why'd you switch from one to the other?"

Tyler grinned. "‘Cause, unlike working for hire, you get paid every week."

For a while, the tent fell silent again. Then Tyler said, "So what did
you do before you joined?"

Despite his weariness, Curt smiled, albeit bitterly. "I was an artist."

"WHAT?! An artist? No shit?" Tyler cursed under his breath. "I had no
idea we were that desperate for men. Uh, no offense."

"None taken," Curt assured him. "I of all people know just how out of place
I am."

Just then, Magnus lumbered into the tent and said, "Hey guys! We gotta go,
they're doing a drill for when the enemy arrives."

The mercenary and the artist looked at each other and with twin sighs reached
for their equipment.
