"Hurry up, private!" barked someone as he ran by.
Cursing under his breath, Curt tried to run even faster but found himself
slowing down. As he slowed, he found himself cursing his luck as well. Only
he could join the militia two and a half months before war broke out.
*Dammit, all I wanted was to learn discipline, maybe bulk up a little, and
NOW I'm fighting a damn war..."
His tirade was interrupted as he finally stumbled into the palace
courtyard. Seeing the unit he was assigned to, he straightened out his
aching body and tried to look as unpained as possible marching to his
spot. Finding one between a soldier about his age and an extremely muscular
warrior.
After a few moments, the younger soldier muttered something. Sensing it
was directed at him, Curt asked, "Excuse me, did you say something?"
The soldier shot him a brief grin and replied, "I said, 'Doesn't look like
this is gonna be another parade.'" The bearded warrior on the other side of
Curt snickered.
Curt tried to think of a witty reply but was too tired and scared and
frustrated. "Guess not," he muttered instead.
The soldier smiled and said, "Name's Tyler Gartym. Yours?"
After a moment's hesitation, he replied "Curtis LaDonne."
The bearded man next to them broke in, "Mine's Magnus Danielson."
Curt, not knowing what else to say, shrugged and said, "Nice to meet both
of you."
With a sardonic grin, Tyler chimed in "Yeah, good to know who you're going to die with."
As if on cue a voice boomed, "ATTENTION!" The courtyard echoed with
the sound of 5,000 troops snapping to attention. The general who called this
order then yielded the podium to the Emperor.
Denar looked out over the troops, then looked down to begin his speech.
"Soldiers of Vector, prepare to do what no soldier has done for centuries.
Prepare to defend your emperor, your home- and your honor..."
