Johan was shaking. Today was very special, because it was one of the
rare occasions when news came from the outside world.
Years ago, TinAmonMuse was a subversive group of anarchists. Over the
years, some of the group's most influential members decided that it was
pointless to try to undermine society, and personal fulfilment could only be
achieved by separating yourself from the system, and making your own
community from scratch. And they did just that. Some of the group's other
members disagreed with this, though, and it is rumoured that they left and
started a new anti-authoritarian group, but those rumours have never been
substantiated.
When the carrier pidgeon landed, Johan removed the note that was
attached to it and opened it with great anticipation. After he read the
note's content, he said to himself, "I've gotta show this to Junior."
There was a certain irony in the fact that the TinAmonMuse compound's
oldest living resident was called Junior. But there was actually a meaning
in his nickname. His real name was Mog Jr. He had been taken in by
TinAmonMuse when he was just a small boy, and had been disowned by his father.
Johan knew he could find Junior in his bedroom. Junior spent most of
his time in bed. He didn't feel the need to come out of bed much since his
second wife and his children died. He didn't want to make emotional
connections with anyone else at the compound, for fear that he would lose
them someday. So was the life of someone cursed with near-immortality. When
he was only a baby, Mog injected Junior with Jenova cells.
"Um, Junior," said Johan. A world-weary, yet eternally youthful face
peered out from under the covers. "Yes?" said the part moogle, part human,
part Cetra, part Jenova. "Sir," said Johan, "I realize that you prefer to be
left in solitude as much as possible, but we received a letter today, and it
pertains to you..." He handed the note to Junior. He started to read it.
"Um, should I leave sir...?" Junior was too engrossed in the message to
regard Johan's presence any longer. After reading the note, Mog Jr. said to
himself, "I have a brother?!"
