A pounding on the door caused Tim to awake with a groan.
In the small room he was sleeping in, the shudder that acted as his window
showed that it was just after dawn.
Grumbling and groaning, Tim swung his feet out of the bed and rubbed his
eyes. A soft groan emerged from the bed beside him, and Tim turned to look
upon the fair damsel that had spent the night with him. Tim smiled softly at
the small sleeping figure.
The pounding on the door again made Tim's smile disappear. Grimacing, Tim
pulled on his trousers and strode to the door. He opened it and was greeted
by a lantern.
"The girl is not underage, and she works here, so don't go charging me
more," said Tim, he grabbed the wrist of the man who held the lantern and
lowered it.
"I'm not here about the girl," said the older man. He wore fine clothes
and a neatly trimmed moustache. "I have need of your services."
Tim nodded his head to the gentleman. "Forgive me sir. But why are you
summoning me so early?"
"Because I want you to get started on a job I have for you. You are still
available for employment, correct?"
"Oh yes, yes sir," said Tim. "If you would pardon me, I will get dressed
and meet you downstairs in the bar. I will be but a moment."
The gentleman gave an affirmative sound and strode down the hall. Tim
closed the door and hurried to the bed. As he sat down, the barmaid groaned
again.
"I'm sorry, luv," said Tim. "But business calls, I must be off."
"Oh...," sighed the young woman. "Can't you stay a little longer?"
Tim chuckled. "Aye, I wish I could, but this man looks rich and important,
and his business must be urgent. And if it's urgent, then it must be
valuable, so I can get a good reward from it." Tim hurriedly dressed,
removing his pants to put on underwear and socks. He then put on his pants
shirt and vest and fastened his cloak.
Tim's attire was more expensive then most. He had come upon the idea of
wearing socks and underwear from the nobles he served, and found that the
practices were healtier, and cleaner. Grabbing his boots, Tim leaned over
and kissed the damsel on her pouting lips. Her green eyes watched him from
under her hazelnut hair.
"With any luck, I shall be back tonight, a richer man," added Tim with a
grin.
Tim stepped out of the room and hurried down the hall, running his hand
through his short hair and wiping his face with his sleeve.
Down the steps and into the barroom, Tim sat down on a stool at a table
opposite the man who wakened him. Tim pulled on his boots and fastened his
sword while they talked.
"What service may I perform for you, my lord?"
The gentleman spoke. "Last night, a pack of wolves attacked my herd of
sheep."
"Beggin your parden, my lord, but could not your own farm hands go out and
hunt down the wolves that did this?"
"Yes. But these sheep were in a pen, with five sheep dogs and two herdsman
watching over them," said the man. "The wolves killed one man, mauled the
other, killed all the dogs, broke the wooden gate of the fence, and killed
and ate a third of the sheep. These are no ordinary wolves. The boy who was
mauled supports this, saying there were almost as large as bears."
Tim stopped and stared at the man.
"I want you to lead a hunting party to track down and kill these animals."
Tim thought for a moment. "First off, my lord, my name is Tim. What is
yours?"
  "I am Baron Rasel."
"Now, my lord baron, what you speak of is quite impressive. And I can see
why you came to me." Tim paused as he thought. "I can do as you ask. How
many men can you give me?"
"Ten," said Rasel. "My strongest lads, and the best hunters and bowmen.
They have swords and bows and are at my ranch, waiting for us."
"I'll need a bow and quiver full of arrows," said Tim. "As well as two,
three horns to signal with."
Rasel nodded. "I can also give you two guard dogs. They're tracking may
not be the best, but they can add to your number."
"Good," said Tim. "Then my lord, I shall join you on your way to your
manorhouse. But once we arrive, I must ask for some food to eat. We will
discuss the payment after I have seen and dealt with these monster wolves."
  "Good," said Rasel.
Tim sighed with relief. He was too groggy from sleep to begin haggling,
especially on an empty stomach.
The two men stood and left the tavern. After retrieving their horses, they
quickly rode away.
