As Lance walked toward Kat's tent, he attracted many stares from others
of his kind. Sometimes certain external factors would cause one Henriksen to
act differently from the others, but what could have happened to this one
that made him get up before everyone else, and then go to see the General,
they wondered.

"I would like to speak with General Kat," Lance said to the other
Henriksens who were guarding the tent.
"Why do you wish to speak with her personally? You could just as easily
tell one of us, and we could tell her," said the guard, feeling as though he
had been patronized by having to say that when it should be obvious.
"You see, I am not a regular Henriksen. And for this reason, I must ask
the General's permission to leave this army."
"I see," said the guard, "You may speak with her now. She just finished
talking with the Torbeno of the Avariel minutes ago." He motioned the unique
Henriksen to enter. The guard felt uneasy. He wondered what could make that
Henriksen different from the rest. Could it be a genetic mutation? He
decided to send word of this back to Henriksenia after the war, so that the
implications could be looked into.

"Lance?" said Kat, "What are you doing here at this hour?"
     "What hour?"
"Good point. Anyway, what do you wish to see me about?"
"This may be hard to believe, but I found out recently that I am the
reincarnation of Captain Nighthawk's lover. As such, I am not as in tune
with the collective conciousness of the Henriksens as the rest of us are. I
think I could better serve the war effort by joining the side of the avariel."
"That's fine," said Kat, "I suppose only one less man wouldn't make that
much of a difference, especially if he is not good at working with the rest
of the men anyway. Permission granted."
He smiled, saluted her, and left the tent.
Kat sat down. These last several months were the most bizarre and
emotionally draining months of her life. She'd be glad once this was all
over, that is if she lived through it. She sighed. The only thing she had
known lately that had the ability to reassure her was Poochie, but now, she
had no idea where he was or what he was doing.

           * * *

Poochie considered appearing to Kat, to calm her nerves and boost her
confidence for the upcoming battle. But just as he was about to, he felt
something. He was being called by Bahamut, King of the Espers. He
immediately beamed up to Bahamut's cave on Lunaris. After materializing, the
dog esper knelt before the large dragon, "What do you desire, my liege?"
"The Magicite of Denar. I feel that it's powerful evil magic should not
exist where it can be found by people who are weak of heart. I want you to
retrieve it and bring it back to me, where the world will be safe from it.
And be careful, it's dark magic is so powerful that it could even consume
you."
"But my liege, forgive me, but with the time of the final battle drawing
near, shouldn't I be concentrating my efforts on assisting Kat?"
"It is true that the matter of Kat and the moogle war deserves utmost
attention, but getting this magicite will not take long. After you have
brought it to me, you may return your attention to the war."
Poochie nodded and beamed back down. He went straight to Vector, where
Denar had been slain. He sensed that there were mass graves all over the
place. He mentally searched each of these until he found one the emitted a
magical aura which could only be coming from Denar's remains. Poochie went
to this grave, which turned out to be a large ditch full of decaying human
corpses. After doing a little digging through them, he found the body of
Denar, clutching something shiny. Since Denar's blood was mostly human, his
physical form remained on the material plane after the life had left it, but
since he was part esper, a certain amount of his essence had been converted
to Magicite. Poochie removed the translucent stone from the dead Emporer's
cold hand.
Upon touching the Magicite, Poochie felt cold chills go up his spine.
He could feel Denar's sinister presence. Bahamut wasn't kidding when he said
this thing was powerful. Poochie could feel power radiating from it, and
judged that in his living form, Denar was much more powerful than he was.
Poochie felt a tinge of envy at the thought that some young half-breed
posessed more strength than a fool-blooded Esper who had been honing his
skills for thousands of years.
"Ow!" he shouted, and he felt a sharp pain in the hand that he was
holding the Magicite in, so he let go of it. Then he realized that it was
still in his hand. It was stuck to his hand. He tried to shake it off of
his hand, but it was still there. He realized that it was now a part of his
hand. He paniced at this realization, but panicing only made things worse.
The more fear he felt, the faster the evil Magicite became a part of him,
soon, the whole thing had become one with him.
In his last moments as himself, he regretted not keeping a calm pure
mind, but the shame associated with this regret solidified Denar's presence
inside of Poochie.
Poochie grinned. "No more mister nice rockin' esper dog," he said,
before beginning to make his way back to Southvale.
