As Kat and Ladice made their way to Vector, they stopped in a small
village. It was not allied with Vector and they felt somewhat safe from
pursuit.
The two women entered a tavern filled with a few people. They went up to
the bar and ordered some food.
Bartender: It will be a moment.
As the two waited, a man who's breath reeked of ale, came up and forced
himself between the two women.
Drunk: My, you two fillies look scrumptious. What are you doing in a place
like this? Looking for a real man?
Kat: HA! Real man? You're so drunk I bet you couldn't even get it up even if
you tried.
Drunk: What? You little wentch. I'll teach you to talk to me that way.
The drunk raised his fist to back-hand Kat, when another hand grabbed the
man by the throat and pulled him back violently. The man landed on the floor
hard, his head bouncing. Standing over him, a man stood with a cloak on, his
head uncovered.
Kat and Ladice looked at the man. He had short, curly, brown hair and a
plain face. Brown eyes looked down at the man, then raised and looked at the
two women. He spoke with a deep, clear voice.
Man: I'm sorry that this man would give you trouble, ladies. It's a good
thing I came to your aid when I did.
Ladice swallowed. "Thank you, sir. We owe you our gratitude."
The man bowed slightly. "My honor, my ladies. But actually, you wouldn't
happen to have need of a mercenary, would you?"
Kat: What? You don't even know who we are.
The man looked at the two of them. "It's kinda obvious you two aren't from
around here, and that you are rich." He looked at Kat. "Your boots signify
high rank and your features are too beautiful to make you a commoner." He
then looked at Ladice. "And you, my lady, carry yourself with the grace of a
princess. And since you two seemed like a high class pair, where are your
bodyguards, husbands, servants?"
Kat and Ladice looked at each other. Kat leaned over and whispered to
Ladice. "What do you think?"
Ladice: We could use a bodyguard till we got to Vector, and I'm sure that
you, I, and Smura could take care of him if he decided to turn on us.
Kat: Okay. *to the man* Yes, we could use a bodyguard till we reach our
destination, Mr...
Man: Call me Jim.
Kat: Okay, Mr. Jim.
Jim: No, just Jim.
Kat: Okay, Jim.
Jim: Thank you ladies. I am without a job at the moment, since my last
employer run out of money. And I am going where job opportunities seem to
be, but am having little luck. I almost wish there was a war on so I could
have some regular income.
Kat nodded. "Well, travel with us and keep us safe, and I am sure that our
husbands will reward you very well."
Jim nodded. "Thank you again, my ladies." Jim then sat down on the other
side of Ladice, keeping her between him and Kat. He called for the
tavernkeeper. "Hey, Olaf. I'll have that second ale now. I think my luck is
changing for the better."
