"Well, at least he apologized for disobeying specific orders," said
General Wang. He put down the communication from Tim that he had been
reading to those gathered in the command tent.
"But sir, how can we continue to have Tim as an officer?" asked Colonel
Mekkes. "He is ruining the cohesion of the army. And his behavior is a
terrible example for other officers."
"What behavior?" asked Wang. "The fact that he acts for the benefit of
Doma? The fact that he'll go out of his way to further our reconquest of
home? The fact that he trains his men the best, disciplines and trains them
to the best of their abilities?"
  Mekkes fumed but said nothing.
"What you need to remember is that Colonel Tim is Lord of All That Kicks
Ass, not because he won that honor in a duel, but because we told him to
be," said Wang.
"But why sir? Why have us 'believe' in a myth?" asked Mekkes.
"Myth? Tim is flesh and bone. I have seen him bleed, seen him fight, shook
his hand, made him flinch when I yelled at him. Tim is real, Colonel Mekkes.
Remember that."
"Yes sir, I know. But why dramatize his rank and position?"
"Why not?" retorted Wang. "Tim is capable and loyal, that has been proven
beyond a doubt. And his example and sacrifices spread like wildfire through
the ranks. His exploits are known to every soldier. And they think of him as
Lord of All That Kicks Ass, not merely as Captain Tim. And that is the
benefit he holds.
"Even now, Tim has continued to serve our goals and our ends, by taking
Hiel Keep. Everyone knows that it is near impossible to take Hiel Keep, but
Tim did it. In fact," said Wang, holding up the letter, "he did it in one
night and with the loss of twenty men. He even sent instructions to the
other battalions to use Hiel Keep as a focus to draw in the enemy. Everyone
knows about what he did, and this will inspire them to achieve greatness as
he has done."
  Mekkes nodded.
"And that is why he is now a colonel," said Cyan. Everyone turned to look
at their king, who had been sitting quietly in a corner. "Tim's success
equals Doma's success. This much is certain now. If we trust in Tim, we
shall succeed."
Wang furrowed his brow, but said nothing.
"General Wang, I want you to give Tim more men as soon as possible,"
continued Cyan. "Another battalion even. Have the Lance Henriksens take and
hold Hiel Keep. I want Tim mobil as soon as possible. He works best in the
field.
"And hopefully he has no problems with those avariel."
