V'Terr sat silently as he piloted his own Gear, once in a while glancing
over to the twin lifeless bodies which he had lain carefully on the seat next
to him. Looking back to the landscape going by, he continued to search for
where it had been. It had been such a long time.
Finally, he found the place. This was it, according to the Gear's
internal orientation system. Luckily, the area was deserted. He could have
done this anywhere, but he thought it would be fitting to do it here.
V'Terr landed the Gear, opened the hatch, and removed each body from the
Gear. He laid them side by side. As he stood before them, he summoned the
magic power from deep within himself. He closed his eyes, lifted his head,
and chanted the words he never thought he would have to, "Kiathla tsilu
silokwe silokwe!"
Life returned to the two Vincents. V'Terr felt weakened. He was old
again, but he did not have time to rest now. After casting that spell, he
did not have much time left, so he immediately cast the second spell, "Kiai
silu silu, tsithl!"
There was a blinding flash which knocked V'Terr over. When his sight
returned, he turned his head to look over to where the two had been. In
their place was now only one very disoriented looking Vincent. Vincent got
up and knelt at the dying old man. "Are you alright?" Vincent asked.
V'Terr weakly grinned, "I'm feeling better than I have for thousands of
years." He let out of cough.
"I'm very confused," said Vincent, "Who are you? And for that matter,
who am I?"
"I am V'Terr, hero of the ancient war. And you are Vincent, my son."
Vincent was taken aback by this revelation. "You must have a lot more
questions," said V'Terr, "I wish I could answer them all, but as you can
probably tell, I won't be here for much longer. Here, touch my forehead, and
you will know."
Vincent did as he was requested. As his hand touched the old man's
brow, his mind was flooded with memories. Then it was all clear.
-----------
Long ago, long before the Moogle Wars, long before the world had even heard
of Moogles, there was a great war waged between the humans of the world, and
a race of highly-advanced reptites known as Homo Reptilious. The Reptites
were lead by one known as Hecht, Lord of the Annihilation of Thought, and the
humans were lead by a General V'Terr Valintine. The war raged on for years
on end, with neither side seeming to be on the losing end.
In an effort to upset the tables, Hecht masterminded a plan to kidnap
V'Terr's 7 year old son, Vincent. Hecht hoped that this would not only break
V'Terr's spirit, but also that it would rejuvenate the moral of the reptite
army. It seemed to do a little of each, but not as much as V'Terr wanted.
Then one day, as he was being briefed on some new advances that the reptites'
top scientists had made in the area of bio-engineering, he got a fiendish
idea.
Hecht instructed the scientists to use their polarization procedure on
young Vincent, spliting him into two separate individuals, one embodying his
benevolent side, and ther other embodying his malevolent side. They injected
the evil Vincent with reptite DNA, and also subjected him to enough
brainwashing to convince him that he was born as a reptite. The DNA of homo
reptililous also caused him to mature quickly and live long, just as reptites
do.
The purpose of all this was to appoint the soon full grown, evil Vincent
as a General in the Reptite army. This, decided Hecht, would be the ultimate
moral boost for the Reptite troops, and the final nail in the coffin in
V'Terr's will to go on fighting.
At first, Hecht intended to kill the good Vincent. He didn't see how
the compassionate child could possibly be of any use to them. But it soon
occured to him that it might be a good idea to keep him alive, in case
General Vincent ever needed any blood or organ transplants. Even though the
evil Vincent had become more Reptite than human, his twin was still the
closest possible genetic match to him.
The good Vincent's memory was subsequently erased, and he was sent to a
parallel dimension, where time flowed slowly in relation to the dimension
that the reptites lived in. This way, even though the part-reptite Vincent
would outlive the human one, the reptites could always find the good Vincent
in good health, because of the difference in the flow of time. Hecht's plan
was sure to work, or so he thought.
Around the same time, the human scientists had also made leaps and
bounds in the field of bio-engineering. They had developed a highly
infectious, fatal virus which only effected reptites. They unleashed this
virus before the reptites had been able to use General Vincent in combat. As
a reaction to this, the reptite scientists worked quickly to find an
innoculation. The best they could do was to develop cybernetics which could
be "installed" on a reptite, which would make their bodies stronger against
infection. Unfortunately for the reptites, this technology was not very
effective against the virus.
In a last-ditch effort of self preservation, Lord Hecht transported
himself and other reptite elite, including General Vincent and a being which
the reptites worshipped as a god, into an alternate dimension.
To make sure that the reptites never came back, the human mages and
scientists worked together to build devices which combined force field
technology and ancient black majick texts, devices that would keep the
reptites sealed in the other dimension. They placed these devices in the
Gear hangers which they used during the war. As a precaution against anyone
trying to break the seals, they walled in all of the hangers with a wire mesh
which no person would be able to break through, the integrety of which would
last for at least a few thousand years, by when they would be all but
forgotten about.
The humans rejoiced in their victory in what seemed until then to be a
hopeless war. But V'Terr felt as though he had suffered the ultimate defeat,
since his son had still not been recovered. Search parties went all over the
world, but could not find V'Terr's boy.
Even though he had never been a superstitious man, V'Terr consulted
numerous seers, Tarot readers, and astrologers on the wherabouts of young
Vincent. They all told him similar stories which all told of Vincent being
split in two and sent to alternate dimensions. They also told of Vincent's
destiny to destroy the Lizard God in the distant future, but only with
V'Terr's help.
V'Terr, trying to figure out what this all meant, asked a wizard how he
might live to see the distant future so that he could help his son. The
wizard told him that there was one spell which a mage could cast on himself
that would give eternal life, but that the effects of the spell would only
last until the mage cast another spell. Also, a side-effect of the spell was
that the mage would exist only partially in the material world, and also
exist partially in the spirit world, and not interact completely with either
one.
V'Terr had never used majick before. In fact, he had always been
frightened of it. But out of love for his son, he studied the majick arts.
By the time he was an old man, he had mastered the skills necessary to cast
the immortality spell on himself. He did so, and for thousands of years, he
walked the the face of the earth as a part-living, part ghostly-being. He
continued in this state until the re-emergence of the two Vincents, then he
knew exactly what he had to do.
-----------
Vincent sobbed onto his father's shoulder. He looked up and saw the old
man's eyes, beaming through all the pain with pride and love for his son.
Vincent hugged his father once more, and then felt the old man's body go limp
in his arms.
