My name’s Kallie, and this is Zaries

"What a piece of sh-"

Zaries cleared his throat and frowned at Kallie, but Roger shrugged apologetically. "Sorry. I know it's not much to look at, but it's almost up and running!"

Now the black-haired young man frowned at Roger. "Excuse me- did you just say, 'almost up and running?'"

Kallie, staring in open-mouthed disgust at the rusted wreck before them, replied, "Why is THAT not surprising?"

Roger's embarassed expression became more sheepish, and he whined, "Hey, give me a break, you guys. It's not like I can afford a brand new ship."

To say the old space cruiser was run down would have been like calling the Biblical Flood a brief shower. The hull showed numerous pits and wicked scars that had been worked over with little to no care for looks. Most of the access panels on the exterior were bent slightly askew, hanging limply off their cracked and failing hinges. Out from under some of those panels sprang tangled and dirt-crusted wires. Indeed, the last time one could have truthfully said the ship had had better days was probably decades ago.

And now Zaries and Kallie stood in front of this monstrosity, trying to pay attention to Roger's explanation as they looked upon it in horror.

"The way I got it was I noticed it one day as I was cleaning out the trash area of the ship, and I asked the first mate if I could fix it up and use it. He agreed to let me have it if I did." Then Roger frowned. "For some reason, he seemed to find that hilarious..."

Kallie glared at him. "Well, I'm not laughing! I can't believe we trusted you!"

"Now, now," consoled Zarie weakly, "we all can't have a MT-95000 Deluxe to travel the galaxy..."

The woman then turned her scowl on her companion, retorting, "Don't tell me you assume this- this- THING actually works!"

"Oh, but that's the thing," cut in Roger, grinning. "It will, once I install this last part. I just got it today at the parts shop."

Now Kallie turned back to him, this time an incredulous look on her face. "Are you for real?"

He nodded, "Yeah, really. It may look like hell, but the wiring and engine and stuff have held up pretty well. That's the thing about BS-1000's- nothing short of a garf-ball-sized meteorite to the engine can make 'em break down."

"Well, that's good," sighed Zarie, somewhat relieved. "Well, you'd better get in installed. We need to leave as soon as possible."

"Oh, no prob," said Roger absently, already heading for the ship. "It'll only be a minute."

Once he disappeared inside, Zarie turned to his companion with a sardonic grin. "Well, at least now I know you won't try to steal it."

Kallie grimaced, shivered in disgust, then glared at him. "Laugh it up, rooster boy."

He glowered back with an intense stare. "How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?"

She rolled her eyes and groaned, "Yes, Master...Dammit, why'd you have to look so young? I feel like an idiot calling you 'Master.'"

He grinned again. "To tell you the truth, that was the point." He then quickly dodged her punch and retreated, still grinning.
