The forces were arrayed and the battle plans set in motion.
Two armies lay poised to strike each other.
The army of Doma numbered close to ten thousand. Infantry, cavalry,
bowmen, Dragoons, swordsmen, rangers, commandos, ballistas, and even
war-mages all stood ready to do battle.
Across from the Doman forces, close to fifteen thousand moogles, humans
from Vector, and mechs stood ready to battle. They had crossed the ocean and
had been preparing themselves for a few months now, while their
reinforcements arrived. Especially the magitek machines which towered over
the other soldiers. The huge metal figures stood just behind the initial
lines of their troops, but their weapons were plainly obvious.
Tim and Hisel watched the action from the right side of the Doman lines.
They, and their captain, Ulice, were assigned to guard the flank. Tim's
battalion had been assigned this job since they were more experienced field
officers and would be most effective if given more freedom of movement.
"This doesn't look good," said Tim aloud.
  "Aye," said Hisel.
Ulice, an older soldier, greying at his temples and with a slight pounch
to his stomach, grunted. "Not to fear," he said, his voice dry.
  "Sir?" asked Tim.
Ulice looked at Tim. "Well, mercenary, what you don't realize is that this
is an army that Doma has brought forth, not some ragtag, hired hands group.
"You see, as soon as the war started, all of Doma's soldiers were
mobilized, even the reserves. And we began training new soldiers. While the
fighting has been going on, the oldier soldiers have been defending the
borders while our new soldiers and leaders are trained and prepared for
battle, eventually joining those on the front lines.
"What you see here," Ulice indicated the Doman forces, "is the best of
what Doma has to offer. Look at the phalanxes? Each man has a helmet,
breastplate, and shield made of metal. He'll be protected from most of the
projectiles that the moogles hurl at him if he keeps his head about him. The
ballistaes are mobile and can quickly fire strong bolts at the mechs those
moogles have. Also, we have more ballistaes then they have mechs."
Counts of the moogle mechs had placed them at close to fifty.
"And our Dragoons are some of the best in the world. They've been on
special missions since the war began and our now assembled here for this
battle. I got a feeling that General Cyan will hold them in reserve for a
special opportunity."
Ulice pointed at the moogle forces. "The moogles use crossbows mostly,
since they don't have the long arms for bows. And because of this, they have
to shoot straight, trying to angle shots is difficult. Our bowmen, however,
are skilled at good angled shots. We can shoot over our own troops, while
the moogles have to have their crossbowmen on their front lines."
"And since the crossbowmen don't carry shields or spears like the rest,
that makes their front line disunified," said Hisel.
"Exactly," said Ulice. He cleared his throat. "What will happen is the
soldiers will advance on each other, the shield men of Doma taking whatever
the moogles throw at them. And when close enough, archers will launch a
volley or two. The cavalry will ride around and harass their flanks and
rear. And the rest of the infantry spread out evenly and fill in wherever
they can. The Dragoons will hold back till General Cyan sees a need for
them."
  "The war mages?" asked Tim.
"Who knows," answered Ulice. "Against the magiteks or creating
distractions. Cyan will use them as he sees fit."
Ulice looked to the Doman lines and saw a flag signal.
"Okay," he said, turning and walking over to his chocobo. "Let's get
ready. Tim, you lead your men on the inside. Hisel, you get the outside.
Hisel, you are the right most wing, so don't let them get around you. I'll
keep the last two brigades in reserve and bring them out as I see fit. Let
me know what developments arise."
Ulice looked at Tim. "If the moogles spread too far out our way, I want
you moving to the right. I'll move another brigade to fill in between you
and the guys to our left."
  "Yes, sir," said Tim.
Tim and Hisel mounted their chocobos and hurried to their men. They then
led their men out. Ulice signaled to the main forces that his men were
ready.
The moogles began their advance before the Domans were fully ready, but
the Domans began moving forward without a hitch.
The terrain was a big, open, and flat land. There was a dirt path, but it
was mostly low cut grass, being a pasture land for a cattle rancher. On the
right wing, Tim's men were moving through high barley and on the edge of a
small stand of trees. Hisel's men were moving through the trees and beyond
it.
Tim kept three companies forward, one in the rear as his own reserve. The
soldiers formed a loose line, keeping a relatively even line with the main
force to their left. Ahead of them, their was an orchard of fruit trees and
some other low cut grass. The moogles would be easy to spot in the grasses,
but the orchard might provide some cover for some hidden units. It could be
especially good at providing cover for moogleboars.

  The soldiers advanced.
In the main field, the moogles had surprisingly kept their heads and not
rushed to the full assault.
General Cyan watched from atop his large black chocobo and studied
everything. He was not ready to be taken advantage of.
When a hundred paces away from each other, the magitek armors, which had
kept right up with the front lines, opened up with projectiles.
Arrows, bolts, magical attacks, even bullets were fired in a spray against
the Doman soldiers.
The warmages had provided some magical protection to the troops, which
helped to diminish the magical attacks. Projectiles struck metal shields,
thuding and glanging. Grunts and screams of pain echoed out. Some soldiers
were knocked back and some fell down. A smoke enveloped the Doman soldiers.
As the smoke cleared, it was evident the human line was not as solid as it
was a moment before. But the human line continued to move. The holes were
being refilled as fresh soldiers came forward.
As this happened, a volley of arrows were loosed, sailing over the Doman
soldiers and striking the moogle soldiers and mechs.
It was the moogles turn to scream and cry out in pain. A few of the
smaller mechs had taken some damage. Liquid pouring out, arrows and
arrowheads jammed into gears so these could not move.
Another volley of arrows sang out, striking the moogle lines again.
In retailation, the moogles crossbows loosed. Finding and striking the
soldiers not totally prepared, limbs were almost severed as they were hit by
bolts and jerked back. A few soldiers fell, but most kept to their feet, the
bolts protruding from their shields.
The moogles, having finally unleashed their firepower, gave a yell and
charged full steam into the Doman forces.
The battle was joined. The Doman soldiers, disorganized, were overwhelmed
and lost their cohesion, as moogles penetrated their lines and spread
throughout. This was the moogles advantage and they were definitely wreaking
havoc.
The cavalry charged out and began riding by the moogle flanks, spearing
and slicing the moogles.
Tim and his men found that the sidelines were relatively clear of moogles.
Having found the area clear. They waited for a signal from the general. The
General signaled back that he wanted Ulice's battaltion to strike the
moogles from behind. Tim and his men moved out.
The Domans, to make a long enough line, had thinned their lines. This
would have worked, had it not been for the moogles mechs. These weapons were
large and incredibly distructive.
Junior's magitek armor, it's claws already drenched in blood, was in the
center and enjoying the most slaughter. Doman ballistae's and war-mages were
slowly taking out the mechs, from smaller to larger. The armor on Junior's
machine was strong enough that bolts were bouncing off.
Tim's brigade had reached it's position and engaging the Vector humans.
These soldiers, though not as experienced as the Domans, were not moogles
and had the strength and intelligence to match the Domans.

The battle continued through the day, but the outcome was a victory for
Mog.
The magitek mechs had done severe damage and dealt a bloody blow to the
Doman soldiers.
Cyan had used the Dragoons to take out most of the mechs, but even these
elite troops had taken heavy losses.
Tim was injured in the fighting and was taken back to Doma to recover.
The Doman army retreated to Southvale fort to lick their wounds and await
the moogles next move.
