(Wish I could find my FF3 WOB map)

Eleven days after arriving with the Veldt Corp, Hisel’s brigade was given
three days off.
Tim realized he would need this time off the morning of the eleventh day,
when he put belt on and cinched it one hole tighter then it should be. He
noticed the same in all his men. Some of them had gone from round, full
cheeks, to shallow and sunken. Some men were sick, or at least appeared so.
With the day off, reinforcements were brought in. Due to the brigade’s
losses early on, a squad was given to Hisel to add to his forces. It was
Tim’s job as Sergeant Major to decide what was to be done with the new group
of novices. He was unsure of their training, but knew that they were
inexperienced in the field. So, rather then disrupt the command structure,
he split up the squad, adding men to each other squad in the brigade. Tim
then relayed the order that each corporeal and sergeant was responsible for
bringing their new men up to speed on proctocol and action.
This brought the number of men in the brigade up to seventy five. With the
regular soldiers, a small squad of rangers had been added. They ended up
being guides through the forest. And when not employed in seek-and-destroy
missions on the moogles, the rangers would instruct the brigade on clearing
paths that would be used to help bring reinforcements along.
The first day of the short vacation, Tim spent sleeping twelve hours.
Getting up, from the large pup tent he shared with Martin, he felt like a
new man, instead of the old, tired one the night before.
Wearing only his white under-shirt and pants, Tim stood before his tent
and stretched and yawned, soaking in the suns rays and feeling his muscles
and bones as he strained his body.
Tim put on a pair of slippers, giving his feet a rest from the tight,
confining boots, and strode around his section of the camp.
Loritown was built where a major road intercepted a forest stream.
Originally a small, fortified settlement, it was a place for travelers to
rest when passing between the veldt and Doma. The actual claim of Loritown
was in question before the war, since doing so would require soldiers, and
the supply of such troops would be costly. But with the moogles landing
troops to the south, and maneuvering in the Veldt region, Doma decided that
it needed Loritown to halt any advances on it’s territory.
In fact, Doma had done well in constructing a defensive screen around it’s
land. Different parts of the army were responsible for fending off any
incursions and advances all along Doma’s borders. If Doma and the many towns
and small cities that made up it’s interior could be left in tact, then the
Alliance could last and the moogles be defeated. Indeed, reports were that
the Figaro forces were already mobilizing, as well as others.
The Alliance Council had done well in tricking the moogles to attack Doma
first. The Doman forces were the fastest to mobilize, and the moogles now
found themselves committing all their forces to the Doma campaign while
their other enemies were preparing their own advances.
Tim stopped himself from thinking of the war in general and taking notice
of Loritown instead. The forest town, after being seized by the Doman Army,
was quickly built up, or around. A large earthern wall was dug, reinforced
by logs and with a pit to the outside. Within this, fifty thousand men made
their home.
Soldiers too old, scared, or weak to fight were put to work lumbering the
trees and building strutures. Already a couple decent mess halls were made,
as well as a hospital. Over time, barracks would be constructed, thus giving
the men a decent shelter from the elements.
In Tim’s own little small section of camp, he looked to the two poles
which held the war trophies. Another bastard sword had been strung up on it,
as well as a wicked looking mace. The weapons were extremely large, and
carried by equally large combatants. Around the camp, other brigades and
companies had similar trophies on display.
Tim’s brigade was earning something of a reputation. Hisel and Tim were
becoming known for their ability to move through the forest fast and strike
at enemy forces, even with the odds against them. The training and skill of
the troops was evident. Hisel’s Ghosts or Marauders were a few nicknames
that were passing around. Tim wasn’t sure what the eventual nickname would
be, since it was earned, not chosen by the group in question. He just hoped
that the casualty rate would go down. He was tired of loosing good men.
And so the first day was spent recuperating from lost sleep, and allowing
weary bones time to rest. The second day was spent in resting, building up
the energy reserves which had been spent. And the last day was spent in
preparing to go out again and to fight the moogle threat.
