The day was a quiet one, the field, peaceful. The birds were
chirping, a slight breeze was in the air. It seemed as though this
place had forgotten it was in the middle of a brutal war, one that might
not ever end.

Suddenly, quite out of nowhere, a figure appeared in the middle of a
field. It was a human, and she was sleeping. The birds stopped
chirping for a moment, but when they saw the intruder posed no threat,
continued on their music making.

The afternoon sun was in the sky before the human arose, and the air
had a different feeling. Gone was the tranquility of the morning, and
in its place the essence of war had filled the air.

Mabis awoke not form her horse nudging her awake, as she expected,
but to the sounds of war: gunshots, blades hitting blades, and most of
all, the screaming.

The warrior instinctively reached for her sword, but all she felt
was grass. Alarmed, she quickly got up and looked around. What she saw
was not the campsite where she fell asleep, but a field, and a forest in
the background. "Where the hell am I?" she wondered aloud.

Mabis wandered around a bit, half looking for her belongings, and
half inspecting her surroundings. She found her sword, and after a
while, her pack, which contained her journal, money, and some
necessities.

As for the field, it seemed like any other field she had been in,
except this one had something strange about it, and she could not put
her finger on it. This bothered her, and sent chills down her spine.

The sounds of war inched closer, and Mabis quickly realized she had
to get out of there fast, or else she would be caught in the middle of
the bloodshed. She jolted to the forest, knowing there she would be
safe. She was always safe in a forest, knowing all of its secrets and
illusions.

Mabis climbed a tree, and soon disappeared among its branches. From
her vantage point, she could see the battle that was going on ahead of
her. She had never seen anything like it.

Catlike balls of white fur were fiercely battling an army of humans,
and, incredibly, the balls of fur appeared to be winning. Also strange
was the animal both sides were riding. It seemed to function like a
horse, but instead the creature was a big yellow bird. It reminded her
of an ostrich she had once seen as a little girl at a traveling circus.

Mabis wanted to believe that this was all a dream, that she would
wake up any minute now to her familiar campsite; but this was all too
real, from the feel of the bark on the tree, to the cries of the slain.

"Where the hell am I?" The outsider asked, this time with alarm in
her voice.
