Bacca led the company of dragoons down the woodland road, hot on
the trail of a group of chocoboes with moogle riders. On one of the
chocoboes rode a human woman.
Bacca surveyed the forest on either side of him. He fearlessly led
the party of twenty riders, despite the several ambushes that had been
lain for the humans.
Bacca could not help but remark at how well trained the dragoons
were. Space Cat had done a wonderful job in creating his Lance Henriksen
army.
The Dragoon were a special forces unit, not part of the regular
army. They could be classified as mounted, fast cavalry. Acting acording
to their dragon ideal, they were fast, hard hitting, and well trained.
Each man was a marksman with a bow, excellent with a sword and spear, and
agile riders. In battle, they would often disengage the enemy to perform a
charge, what was called a jump. Although they would allow the enemy time
to recover, their spear charge would often devastate their foes.
Bacca also took note of the fact that while the other soldiers in
the army looked aliked, the dragoons were a more leaner bunch. They had
little to no body fat and were very strong. They also showed no remorse or
hesitation in killing even the most harmless of moogles.
The riders rounded a turn in the path and ahead they saw the
moogles with Lady Paladin as their prisoner. Without a command, Bacca and
his commando unit charged down the path. The moogles, seeing Bacca,
immediately galloped off down the road. As soon as this was done, a tree
fell across the road, blocking it. A hollering filled the air and a few
arrows rang out. The ambush sprang.
Without missing a beat, all the dragoons turned their mounts into
the trees and charged into the advancing moogles and moogleboars. This
surprised the ambushers, who fell back. Bacca and two dragoons then broke
off and rounded the road block. Re-emerging onto the road, they began
their pursuit. A few moogleboars and moogle mounted chocoboes followed
after.
Rounding another turn, Bacca saw the chocoboes ahead and urged his
mount forward.
Another ambush had been lain, this time with a group of ten
moogles that blocked the road. Bacca had no choice but to rein his mount
to avoid the wall of spears presented to him. But looking at the riders
ahead, he smiled.
Out of the forest around the retreating moogles and Lady, another
group of dragoons appeared. They cut off all avenues of escape and quickly
took down the moogles. The moogles surrounding Bacca's small group did not
notice, but concentrated on the High Lord of All That Kicks Ass.
Seeing that his plan had succeeded, Bacca drew a javelin that had
been in a sheath underneath the saddle of his chocobo and threw it. Two
moogles chasing after on chocoboes were impaled by the thrown dart and
fell from their mounts.
A dragoon tossed Bacca another javelin and the High Lord and
through it at the spear armed moogles. One fell with the pole protruding
from it's head.
Bacca then took a bow out, strung it without aid of the ground,
and notched an arrow. With rapid procision and in-human accuracy, Bacca
proceeded to loose an arrow, draw another from the sheath on his back,
notch it, pull back, and loose another arrow without missing a beat. The
remaining nine moogles bearing spears fell to the ground in the space of
eight seconds.
Turning to his pursuers, Bacca saw the dragoons engaging the first
two moogles to close up on them. Loosing four arrows in quick succession,
Bacca took down the two moogles, and another pair that were closing in.
Both dragoons gave Bacca a quick glance, with a slight hint of
amazement on their faces, then turned their attention to the moogleboars
charging at them.
"Give me a sling," ordered Bacca.
The nearest dragoon quickly loosened the strap from around his
body and tossed the leather sling to Bacca, then readied his shield and
spear.
Bacca dismounted as he caught the sling and then fit it onto his
back, having removed his empty sling. With the same procision and deadly
accuracy, Bacca dispearsed the remaining four moogleboars that had given
chase.
"Go help the others back their," ordered Bacca. The dragoons
nodded once and turned to their task.
Four dragoons rode up to Bacca and he directed them to follow the
other two back to the ambush sight. Bacca then remounted his chocobo and
quickly rode over to Lady.
When Bacca stopped by her side, Lady leaped into his arms, almost
knocking him out of the saddle. Awkwardly climbing out of his saddle,
while not letting go of Lady Paladin, Bacca got to the ground and gave
Lady a firm hug, lifting her high into the air.
Holding her a short distance, Bacca looked at his love. He noticed
immediately the weight she had lost. Her cheeks were hollow and the bones
of shoulders that were exposed from her dress stood out pronounced. Dark
circles hung below her eyes and Bacca took note of lines in her face that
appeared when she did not smile.
"I thought I would never see you again," said Lady, her voice a
hoarse whisper. "How long has it been? I lost count of the days."
"Four weeks," said Bacca. He almost could not find his voice. He
finally held his love in his arms. Bacca hugged her tightly again.
The dragoons stood around watching the couple.
When Bacca finally pulled back again, he spoke to the sergeant,
who had come up from the ambush sight.
"Call the airship, we return to Vector and to the war."
Bacca looked back to Lady, who had closed her eyes.
"You will no longer be a part of this thing, my lady," said Bacca,
taking Lady's chin in his hand. "I'll protect, I swear. No one will ever
touch you again."
