From:	Schala

The pain began filtering through to her consciousness.
Slowly, automatically, Schala rolled over onto her side and curled
up into a fetal position, trying to squeeze the pain away.
She shivered. There was no blanket on the bed. Slowly she lifted
her head and looked around with dull eyes. She saw the remnants of her
clothing a few feet away.
She uncurled at a snail's pace. Carefully she stretched out her
legs and put one foot gently on the floor. She winced, not really knowing
what she thought she would feel, but afraid to feel it anyway. She
brought her other foot down, pushed herself off the bed, and carefully
knelt on the floor. Schala stared ahead.
Her entire body was shaking, her mind blank. She hiccuped a bit,
her chest still racked by her dying sobs. Her face was streaked with
dried tears.
Then slowly, slowly, she crawled to the pile of purple cloth that
had once been her clothing. She grasped it with trembling hands and
brought it to cover her chest.
Schala bowed her head and once more began to cry.

Kaitlin began to stir. She felt so groggy and battered. What had
happened?
With a groan, she fell back.

Schala heard the movements from the corner of the tent. She
turned her head and gasped when she thought she saw Kaitlin waking up.
She choked and coughed as she quickly stifled her tears, afraid that
Kaitlin would get up and see what the Moogleboars had done to her. With
shaking hands she tied the torn clothing around her body and made her way
over to her friend.
The druidess was still unconscious. Schala struggled to untie the
ropes. More than once she failed. More than once she sat back and cried.
More than once she wanted to die...
Finally, the Mystic somehow succeeded in freeing Kaitlin. The
woman's head moved slightly, and Schala pushed the druidess's hair out of
her eyes.

The image was blurred, but finally Kaitlin made out Schala's
face. "It's okay," she heard the woman murmur. "It's all
right...everything's all right..."
Something in Schala's voice wasn't quite right, despite the other
woman's assurances. "Schala..." she mumbled after her gag was removed.
Suddenly a memory stirred. "Where are those Moogleboars?" she asked
innocently.
She heard the Mystic gasp and felt her tremble. "Not
here...gone...it's okay, it's okay..." Schala rasped out.
Suddenly she seemed to compose herself. "Go on the bed," she said
in a firmer tone. Kaitlin stood up, cramped from her position, but Schala
helped her walk. She was still so groggy. She lay down.
"Sleep now," the sorceress said. "It's okay...everything's
okay..."
Too tired to figure out what had passed, Kaitlin closed her eyes
and was soon fast asleep.

Schala stood up slowly. A sudden pain in her stomach bent her
over, and she reeled. She clutched her middle and felt a thick stickiness
running slowly down her thighs. She fell to her knees, then dropped to
her side, curled once more in a fetal position. She was gasping for air,
choking on the tears that suddenly sprang from her eyes.
She took no notice of the bloodstains scattered over the bed and
the floor.

The way to meet your fate
is to try your hardest to avoid it.
