The world had fallen away, and all that was left was the greenish-purple
energy that was mana made visible.

Lia was looking *through* trees and people, and the only thing that seemed
real was the mana. She could touch that, manipulate it, send it places.

It was flowing out of her, in a small but steady stream.

Her head felt light and heavy, and the back of it was screaming while the
front of it was filled with cotton. Disoriented, she fell to her knees, her
wings half-spread as though to take flight.

"What's going on?" she whimpered. "What's happening to me?"

- You are a source of life - whispered a voice.

"That doesn't help!" Lia cried. "Why are these things happening?"

- Because there is no control. - The voice was lilting but gravelly,
halfway between a song and a growl.

"You're not Master Arcanis," Lia said. "Who are you? What do you want with
me?"

- I'm your friend, I think, - came the voice. It didn't sound too sure of
itself.

The strangeness in her head was receding, which was a mercy, but the
greenish-purple energy was still everywhere. "You *think* you're my
friend?" she asked.

- There's a lot going on I don't know about. Probably the same is true for
you. So I can't be sure. -

Lia couldn't help it; she laughed. Not the giggle of someone out of touch,
but a pure laugh of merriment. Something in the way the Somebody said the
statement just sounded hilarious. And the laughter broke the tension inside
her, so that she felt sleepy. Vaguely she wondered why; she didn't remember
doing anything strenuous. The past few hours were like a dream. Right now
felt like a dream too, but a better one.

Her laughter had provoked a response from the Somebody; a low, melodic
rumbling. If she had to name it, it would be a purr. Nothing she saw had
changed; the mana was still pouring from her body and she could still see
it. But for now she didn't mind. The disembodied purr rumbled in her ears,
and she fell asleep.

* * * * * * *

Arcanis stood up, grateful that the staff offered physical as well as
mystical support. He'd cleared the worst of the mana poisoning, and Lia had
gone from unconsciousness to true sleep. That would have to do until they
were well away from the Arsenal.
