The dove flew faster and Gooshaki continued chasing it. The field had tall
grass, and he had to be careful to keep his tail above the grassline, lest
he start a wildfire. The bird dove and fluttered. Ahead was a cave. The
dove seemed to be heading toward it. Gooshaki, tired from the romping (he
couldn't remember when it all started ) was looking forward to lounging in
it's shade.
As they neard the cave, Gooshaki noticed an intense heat eminating from
its mouth. The dove landed outside the mouth of the cave, and tentativly
looked inside. As Gooshaki approached, he noticed a faint light coming from
around a very far bend in the cave. The little dove begain hopping toward
it.Gooshaki, interested, followed.
The heat became much more intense with every step, and yet, at each step,
the dove seemed more and more determined to run through the cave. As the
dove picked up its pace, its hops became more and more jumplike, and its
jumps became more and more flightlike. Gooshaki begain jogging to catch up.
He ran a head and looked into the eyes of the dove. They were glowing yellow.
The heat was growing, and the light source was getting closer. as they
finally rounded the last bend they were bathed in an intence exploding
light. There was a giant chasm. A canyon within the cave that was beyond
measure. Filled to the brim, eminating a scorching heat and blinding light
was a flow of lava. The other side of the chasm was so far away it was
nothing more than a line in the distance. The walls and ceiling of this
open area were gold, magnifing the light and the heat. The intensity was
overbearing. The air was wavy from the heat and Gooshkai was amazingly
uncomfortable here. The power was overbearing and frightening to him. He
thought it unnatural and foreign. He wanted no part of it. He wanted to
run away.
The bird did not. After seeing the room, and beholding the scene, the bird
took off. It flew out towards the middle of the lava sea. Gooshaki's heart
sank. He wanted to catch the bird, but he was too far away. He wanted to
grab the bird and bring it back to the cool, natural air of the outside. He
wanted to take the bird with him but the bird was too far away.
The dove flew to the top of the chasm, the ceiling formed a peak and it
flew to the top, to the apex of the room. As soon as it reached its
pinnicle, it begain to dive. Down is swept, towards the river of lava,
whose ends could not be seen. The massive, hot, bright, powerful river, of
which Gooshaki could not wade or cross. Gooshaki could do nothing. He
watched in fear as the bird sank into the firey river. The splash was so
small but he knew it was the distance that made it appear so. The actual
splash was great. He felt the change. He knew the dove wanted to be reborn
a phoenix, but he also knew the lava was to great for her.
Gooshaki curled near the brink of the river. His necklace did not glow
here. He was not comforted. He felt guilty and helpless. One thought
reverberated in his mind. One thought haunted him. One thought echoed in
his head. As a single tear rolled off the edge toward the great river,
evaporating far before it hit lava, he heard himself say, "too far away...,
too far away..., too far away..."

Gooshaki woke up. The sky was dark, the campfire had gone out. The rest of
the harem was sleeping soundly. He got up and looked into the night sky. He
saw stars. He saw trees, and fireflies and deep in the forest he saw the
eyes of a fox. He did not see what he was looking for, but then again, he
didn't know what that was either. He tried to relax, but couldn't. He
didn't get anymore sleep that night. There was only one more day's worth of
journying anyway, he thought. He could sleep when they returned to the Harem.
