Caves. Why did other races so love caves?

The whole group had piled into a handy cave to camp, and lacking any
meaningful alternatives, Lia had perforce joined them. She chose her
standing-place at the cave's mouth, near the guard-fire and the watch post.
She got as close to Outside as she could, wishing the fire could be built
farther in where it would be less of a danger to her. Facing outward,
always outward, she let herself slip into Reverie, the half-conscious
trance state that elvenkind used instead of dreaming.

Except that her eyes soon closed, and she was dreaming in truth. But she
was too far into the dreamworld to notice. Her knees locked, fixing her in
a rigid pose as she slept.

* * * * * * *

The first thing she saw were fires. Great roaring flames, joining and
separating and surrounding her. She screamed, and furiously cast sheets of
ice to try and keep the sparks away from her. The fires took little notice,
almost alive in their unfathomable courses...and then, one by one, each
fire aimed right for her. She could feel the flames as they scorched her,
setting her wings ablaze, her hair aflame...screaming....she lived, but did
she really want to?

And then she was in an open place, no fire anywhere, no burn marks on her
body. Aerdrie Faenya was before her, watching her curiously as she laid out
a Tarot spread. Looking at the cards, Lia could just make out a few. Death,
Strength, The Sun, The World....she heard the delicate chuckle of the
goddess' amusement and all the cards flew at her. "Who is Fate, child?" the
goddess asked. "If I deal the cards and others play them, which of us is Fate?"

And then...another world? Certainly it bore little resemblance to the
places she knew or knew of, and yet not alien. Someone....some man? hard to
say....was looking for something. Someone? No, somehow she knew it was a
*thing* he hunted. She could sense its importance, she must get
involved...to help or hinder? What did he hunt?

Another scene. This one was most definitely of another world, it was much
less scarred than the landscapes she knew. She was hunting something,
something dangerous, and had come across a warrior wounded in battle. He
was not avariel. He didn't look much like the elves she knew, either, being
well over six-foot-six, thin as a rail, and covered in tattoos. She handed
him healing potions (healing potions? Where had she got those?) and he
growled something haughtily in response. She wasn't given time to find out
how he'd got there, or what he was, as she was whisked away again.

And now she was back on familiar ground. At least, the world she knew
surrounded her. Hunters had caged a cat with a flaming tail, and she
watched curiously. The firecats were a race respected but avoided by the
avariel, for the simple and obvious reason that anytime they were annoyed,
their tails would lash and avariel would get seriously hurt. But avariel
did not hunt them; no, they were not considered monsters. Just dangerous.
Around his neck was a chain of stars, and she wondered why the hunters had
not removed it. As it thrashed, it looked right at her. No, no! she
thought, panicky. Surely I am invisible! But the creature looked right at
her, right into her eyes, and without even thinking about it she found her
hand raised to freeze his ropes...

And her eyes flashed open. Before her was the road, to her side was the
watchfire, and on the other side of the entrance was the lizard, watching
her curiously in the predawn light. She took a few deep breaths, trying to
calm the still-panicky beating of her heart. To distract her, she looked
back into the cave, looking for her companions. Master Arcanis looked like
he'd spent the night in Hell, but slept quietly enough. The others were as
she expected. She turned back to face the outer world, suppressing a
shiver. On the ground around her, and around her half of the cave mouth,
the stone was coated with a heavy layer of frost.

Caves, she thought. I'll sleep in a pine tree before I'll sleep in a cave
again.
