As days went, Lia could think of worse ones...

No, scratch that. On honest consideration, really she couldn't.

Accompanying the lizard whether she wanted to or not. Seeing salvation -
briefly - in the form of Master Arcanis finding her, only to have him
disappear. And her best chance of freedom taken away by a bunch of stupid -
terminally stupid - guards who wanted to arrest anyone in the vicinity of a
bar fight, whether or not they were actually *in* the bar in question. Of
course, she'd drawn the line at being shown their torture chamber. Being
locked *indoors*, away from the sky and freedom, was all she was prepared
to handle. If they were into penetration, they could enjoy being pierced by
ice-bolts, and she could work on freezing the lock...

Of course, Master Arcanis' return, weary and coated in other people's
blood, had rendered that part unnecessary. She wanted to ask about it, but
not in front of the lizard. There were a number of things she wanted to
learn, but the idea of the lizard knowing them too was a bit unnerving. The
longer she was around him, the more ambivalent her feelings concerning him
became.

Ah, and the crowning moment to the reigning Worst Day of Her Life...seeing
Pyxie all battered and comatose, her Harem in sorrow. She could *feel* the
weakening of Pyxie's aura, indicating that she was recovering energy lost
in a massive magical working. But more than that, she sensed a ...
bruising? Fracturing? of Pyxie's psyche. Part of her wondered where that
sense had come from, but more of her wanted to know what she could do about
it. Instinctively, she - reached out -

and Ladaku said "Lia will accompany me."

She winced as her reaching was curtailed. Trust Ladaku to find the perfect
phrase to distract her. No one had told her to follow them but Ladaku, and
she hadn't had time to ask any of them for rescue - except when they were
in the jail cell, where such a request would have been pointless.

She was mildly surprised, when Ladaku's group left the Harem, that Master
Arcanis came along with him. Why would he go away from Pyxie?

"Master, I'm glad you've come, but why?" she asked.

"Because he's after Kefka, and I can't work out why," Arcanis responded.
"And I'm not your Master, remember?"

Lia looked crushed at this new blow. "I am not your apprentice?"

Arcanis blinked. It had been a long day. "Oh, that. Ok, yeah, you're still
my apprentice, I think."

She smiled happily. "And you will rescue me?"

Lost, lost in the desert without a roadmap. "Huh?" was the best Arcanis
could do.

"I...got attacked...by Ladaku here, and to keep him from doing worse
things, I promised I wouldn't flee or attack him if he and his - moogle -
wouldn't touch me. But I can be rescued. Will you rescue me?"

"Ah, that would mean fighting him, right?"

"Yes - but you are an Esper Archmage, surely you can defeat a lizard easily!"

"I wouldn't bet on it," said Ladaku casually, over his shoulder.

Arcanis sighed. "Not right this minute, Lia," he said. "I'm not at my best
right now - and it wouldn't make any difference at the moment anyway, since
we're going with him after Kefka."

"Kefka? Who is this Kefka?"

Trying to banish the fog of exhaustion from his mind, Arcanis still was
surprised. "Kefka - the guy we're all after? The one who personally ravaged
the world in ages past? Big maniacal grin, clown type face, heavy on
sadistic laughter?"

"The one who was at the Inn when I was there? I think he was involved in
the bar fight too - but he disappeared from the cell. That fairy queen is
what everyone's after?"

"You mean you didn't know?" Arcanis stared at her in wonder. "What *did*
send you out of your little kingdom?"

Lia looked embarassed. "I was told only that something big was happening -
something that threatened the very existence of NeuVariel. And that I was
supposed to find out what, and stop it. This Kefka person is it?"

Arcanis shook his head, over and over. The avariel had gotten wind of
trouble that could wipe out their whole kingdom, and in response they'd
sent this half-trained mageling out, alone. He was beginning to understand
why the avariel goddess had been so annoyed. "Yes, that's right. And since
we're all after him, we're joining together."

Except she *wasn't* half-trained, was she? Arcanis pondered that training
exercise he'd given her to calm her mind, that she had expanded on. And he
suspected she'd been trying something similar back with the harem, but as
he'd been talking to Ladaku he couldn't be sure.

Ah, to hell with it. The only thing on Arcanis' mind that was holding any
purchase was the command of his overtaxed mind and body to *sleep*. He
could put facts together better in the morning.
