"Is that it?" Hiryuu pointed to a city that was hidden in a valley,
and had just become visible as they rose over the small incline
surrounding the rim. The city glittered in the mid-day sun. In the
centre was a lake, surrounded by what appeared to be buildings of
roman-esque architecture. The dense city centre quickly grew into sparse
farm land, dotted with the occasional homestead.
"Yes. This is Norland." Nera said. Her heart wept at the sight, it
had been nearly 6 years since she was captured by the Akuzo moogle tribe
and kept as a slave. But all that had changed when Hiryuu arrived, and
defeated the entire tribe, freeing all the prisoners. She thought she
had seen the last of him, but he appeared with this red chocobo and
offered her a ride home. She didn't know what made him want to go to
Norland, but she figured it had something to do with the strange tattoos
that appeared on his arms. She had asked him about them, but he just
ignored her or changed the subject, so she didn't press it.
They had begun travelling down the slope of the valley, when several
armoured men cut them off. They were fearsome, hardened warriors, armed
to the teeth and riding black chocobos. The largest one came forward. He
was massive, dressed in all black leather, with a variety of swords,
knives, maces, and axes hanging from his belt. His face was hidden
beneath an ornate obsidian helmet that resembled a dragon. The chocobo
he rode on was a massive black war bird.
"What buisness have you here?" The man yelled. Nera slid off the
chocobo and walked over to the man. She spoke to him, but Hiryuu
couldn't hear what was being said. He could see the man visibly
straighten and call the rest of his unit over. They conversed in hushed
tones before signalling Hiryuu over.
"You have done a great deed for our country. We would have you as
our guest for as long as you wish." The leader said. He removed his
helmet revealing a chisled, scarred face beneath shortly kept blond
hair. "I am Frioniel, Dragoon and Knight Marshall of Norland." He
removed his gauntlet extended his hand in greeting.
Hiryuu took it. "Hiryuu of the heavenly dragon school of martial
arts." The mans grip would make most men wince, but Hiryuu smiled and
returned it fully.
Frioniel laughed. "Come. I will show you our city." Nera had saddled
up with one of the other men and was already heading towards Norland.
Hiryuu led his smaller red chocobo beside the massive black one.
"Lead the way."
After passing through the outlying farmlands, they came to the gates
leading to the city. To the right was a huge monument, a dome supported
by pillars overtop a statue of a man. He looked silently away from the
city, as if to protect it. The statue was cracked with age but seemed to
be well maintained. A copper plaque at the base turned green with age
bore the inscription, "Bacca." Hiryuu asked Frioniel about it. He
laughed and said "You will find out soon enough."
Passing throught a main street, Frioniel turned to Hiryuu. "The
castle is probably in an uproar, want to stop for something to eat?"
Hiryuu remembered just how long it had been since he last ate, and
quickly agreed. They went to a small cafe Frioniel picked out and
tethered the chocobos.
"So tell me your story, Hiryuu." Frioniel said once they were
seated.
Since he was in no hurry, Hiryuu agreed. "Well, my father made this
dying wish.."
Hiryuu was interrupted by a loud fanfare outside. "What was that?"
Frioniel was picking his teeth with a small dagger. "Must be the
welcoming parade."
Hiryuu was confused. "For me?"
Frioniel laughed his deep, gutteral laugh. "No. come and see
yourself."
Hiryuu exited to find a large crowd lining the street. There was a
large procession moving down the street, but Hiryuu couldn't see through
the crowd. He nudged his way to the front, and took in the sight.
Several columns of soldiers on yellow chocobos were riding behind a
marching band. Benind them were two other chocobos, followed by more
soldiers. Hiryuu turned to a man next to him. "Whats going on?"
"You don't know? The princess has returned!"
Hiryuu wheeled to get a look at the two Chocobos. One was a large
black mount like Frioniels, with a powerfully built older man riding. He
was wearing gleaming silver armour trimmed with gold, Hiryuu guessed he
must be this countries king. Next to him was a shining chocobo Hiryuu
had never seen the likes of before. Riding it was the most beautiful
woman he had ever seen, besides Pyxie, in a flowing white dress. When he
looked closer as they marched past, Hiryuu found her to be.. Nera?!
"Nera!" Hiryuu yelled. He tried to get through the crowd to the
street, but soldiers held him back. "Get off me, damn you!"
The king halted the procession and dismounted. The soldiers on
Hiryuu quickly stood and formed a path to him on both sides. Hiryuu rose
and brushed himself off. The king continued towards him, and threw a
vicious right punch. Hiryuu instinctively blocked and countered to the
kings exposed side, knocking him over.
Hiryuu realized what the reflex made him do. "Oh, shit! are you
alright? I didn't mean to hit the king!" He was sure these people would
rip him apart.
The king rose and hugged Hiryuu. Hiryuu, shocked, just stood and
recieved it. "Very good. I like you, boy. The king clapped Hiryuu on his
back, causing him to stumble forward. "You must be Hiryuu, my daughter
has told me a lot about you. I am King Semite of Norland."
"Daughter?"
"Princess Nera, of course. We had given up all hope of locating the
hidden moogle caves, and thought her lost for good."
Hiryuu put the pieces together. "A princess?"
Semite nodded and motioned to Hiryuu's chocobo, which Frioniel was
holding by the reins. "Come ride with us, you are a great hero."
Hiryuu numbly mounted the chocobo and led it into the street.
"Hero?"
A cheer erupted through the crowd.
Frioniel spoke to the king. "So will the sages see him?"
Semite nodded. "Yes. Tomorrow."
