The Night
The Night

Schala

Schala carefully entered the tent. It was nearly midnight now; she had apparently taken a lot longer at Lady's than she had thought.
She knelt beside the sleeping druidess and gazed down gently at her. It seemed as though Kaitlin's sleep, too, was disturbed. Her heart ached. Suddenly the tent was very small and stifling. Quietly, she walked outside again.
The moon was almost new, so there wasn't much light to guide her way. Darkness...why was there so much darkness in everyone now? What had happened?
That was another thing she did not know.
It was impossible to discover the source of the darkness, even if she were to try.
And at the end of the War, what would happen? Would everyone go back to their old lives? But how could you do that? No one could, not when the war had such an impact on everyone...
Schala sighed.
There was much she did not understand. The most frightening was the thought of the future, for it was a journey into the unknown. And that was what she feared. Everyone was changing...but she had been happy when things were all the same. But it was impossible to prevent change.
That was why she was here: to witness the change firsthand and figure out how best to accommodate herself to meet it.
She had always preferred staying out of the spotlight. That was why she had offered her services as a healer...but not in the conventional sense.
She was a healer of the soul...
Schala glanced toward Lady's tent. Her gaze moved on to Kaitlin's.
...And there were two souls she hoped she would be able to help.
