The girl woke slowly from the dreams of a child to the unmistakable
smell of breakfast being cooked in the kitchen of the small house.
Entraned with the smell, she slipped out of her fluffy and warm bed,
into a well placed pair of slippers and went down the worn set of wooden
stairs that led down into the family room, and from there into the
kitchen.

She breathed deeply, the smell never seemed to grow old even if she
smelled it every morning. There was just someting about a breakfast
cooked by a loving mother that made her feel safe and warm.

'Morning Mommy!' she said, announcing her presence to her mother, 'That
smells really good!' With that she launched herself at her mother, who
turned just in time to catch her in her arms.

'Good morning to you too Dear,' she said in that way that all mothers
seem to know, 'Why dont you go get yourself cleaned up for breakfast?..'

The girl giggled slightly and hugged her mother close, then nodded
quickly and dashed off to the cleaning basin to wash her face and hands.

Rydia finished off the last of her bacon happily, even though she was
stuffed to the point where she felt like she would explode. She always
surprised her mother with how much she ate, but her mother knew that no
matter -how- much she cooked, little Rydia would be starving again when
it came time for lunch.

'Why dont you get dressed and go play with Brath?' She suggested,
refering to the only other child in the small village that was even
close to Rydia's age, 'I have to go to the cave to check on the Mist
Dragon later, but Ill be back before lunchtime.'

Rydia fixated on the idea as only a child can, and dressed quickly,
heading out of the house, only after being reminded to give her mother a
kiss on the cheek before she left.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The elder Drake stood at the entrance to the cave, casting the spell
that would call her guardian, the Mist Dragon to her side. Ever since
she had first contacted the magical creature, it had been her duty to
guard the cave that connected the Valley that contained the village,
Mist, to the large and rather miltitaristic kingdom of Baron.

The Dragon Coalelesed in front of her, a happy look in its eyes as it
gazed at its mistress.

'Is everything alright?' She spoke, wincing slightly as the sounds
echoed off of the stone that surrounded them.

<> The summoned
creature replied telepathicly, using the link that all summoners shared
with the creatures that they summoned < forboding... something bad is about to happen...>>

'Your probably imagining things...' The summoner spoke, 'You spend too
much time here.. I know that you have an advantage when it comes to this
cave, but its still too much for one person to have to deal with.. Next
time I get a chance Ill ask the elder to see about maybe getting someone
else to spell you off once in awhile.'

The Dragon nodded slowly, thankfull for the chance of a break of its
duties, but still unable to shake the forboding feeling.

<> The dragon said, < gotten the entire village annoyed by now.>>

Rydias mother smiled and laughed slightly, swearing that the dragon was
smirking. 'Alright, but if you need -anything-, feel free to say so. Ill
tell you as soon as hear anything from the elder.'

Grinning at the dragon again, and waving goodbye, she left the cave and
started down the path towards the village below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The dragon howled in fury, and in pain.

A dark Knight and a dark dragoon had invaded the cave, and she felt the
presence of a magical item strong enough to destroy the village that she
had vowed to protect with her life.

Snapping her head forward she sought to put a quick end to this battle,
attepting to swallow the night in one big gulp. The night wasnt quick
enough to get away, but he did manage to get his sword up in time to
lash out at the dragon.

Small white scales dropped to the floor, and the Mist Dragon reared back
in pain once more. She let her phyisical form slip away for a moment as
the Dark Knight attacked her, his sword whooshing through where she had
been one instant before, now being only a patch of fog. The intense cold
of the dragon was transmited down the blade of the Knight. The cry of
pain she was expecting however was just a muttered curse as the Night
shook off the cold as easily as a bear might shake off a mosquito.

She reformed her body and lunched forward quickly, taking a deep breath
to use her most basic attack. Both the Knight and the Dragoon dodged
behind several large boulders that littered the area, escaping the brunt
of the breath.

The Knight ran out from behind his cover to attack the Dragon from the
front. Pushing her body to the side she dodged his initial attack, and
counterattacked with her formidable teeth, driving the Knight back
several steps.

The Knight attacked again, fast enough that her only recourse was to
leap her conciderable bulk into the air, above the ringing blade of the
man in dark armour. It was only as the lance peirced her back that she
realized that as she had forgotten the Dragoon in defending against the
Dark Knight.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rydia looked up from playing in the field behind her house as her mother
walked into the yard, grinning from ear to ear she got up and ran for
her with her arms open wide. Halfway there she saw the look on her
mother change, the smile slipping from her face, as she stumbled on the
flat ground.

Before her daughter could make it to her, she had fallen to the ground.

Rydia stopped for a moment, wondering if her mother was playing some
kind of game with her, but she was worried, and afraid, and ran even
faster to her mother. After what seemed an eternity she reached her, and
saw that her eyes were closed, as if she were asleep.

Rydia put her arms on her mothers shoulders and tried to shake her
awake, but stopped in shock as she saw the trickle of blood running from
the corner of her mothers mouth.

Rydia knew was death was. Several months ago one of the villagers had
been chopping down a tree, only to have it fall towards him. His
guardian creature had put itself between the man and the tree, only to
be crushed itself. She knew that when a creature youve summoned dies,
then you die too.

Rydia did the only thing she knew how to do, she screamed.

Tears flowed freely down her cheeks as she screamed, time slowing to a
crawl. After what seemed an eternity she had to take a deep breath,
before she could begin screaming again.

Another sound made itself known, quickly drowning out even the sound of
her own screams, looking up, trying to shield her ears with her hands,
she saw the first flames spring up from the houses in front of her.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rydia rolled over on the hard floor, not waking even in the most
horrible parts of her nightmare, reliving it over and over again, the
small cave echoing her tiny whimpers.
